Volume 1 on the critical analysis of capitalist production was the only one
to appear during Marx's lifetime. Only 1000 copies were issued. The book
was translated into Russian in April, 1872 and the 3000 copies sold out in
a short time. The French translation appeared in 1872-75, revised by Marx;
the first English translation , by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling, came
out in London in 1887. Volume 2 and 3 (pts. 1-2) were edited by Friedrich
Engels. Marx spent twenty-five years reading about economics to document
his attack on capitalism.
