Thomas Gray, 1716-1771. An Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.
Illuminated manuscript by Alberto Sangorski on 25 vellum leaves with 20
miniatures. Binding is full blue crushed levant. Front cover has initials
T.G. in 28 diamonds surrounded by a ring of approximately 30 diamonds. A
diamond is in the center of each of the 12 flowers (inlaid with citron
morocco.) Sangorski's letter describes the binding in detail. Alberto
Sangorski, 1862-1932, born in London, was taught the art of illumination by
his brother, Francis, who had studied under Edward Johnson. At the age of
43 Alberto made writing and illuminating his vocation, concentrating on
well-known works of English poetry and prose.
